48 POEMS is a highly stylized literary composition of electrifying poems, and may well be the most complete, comprehensive, and versatile book of its kind. There are 48 poems encompassing eight different genres: each genre containing six poems. The genres include: romantic, dramatic, Thanksgiving, tragic, comedic, ironic, Christmas, and children. Subtitled "Reflections Of A Poet," because it gives an in-depth look into the heart, mind, and soul of one of North America's "purest writers" of our time, who is bound only by the limits of his imagination and creativity. Romantic: Every man should read "Love Me With Your Heart" to his love one at least once. Dramatic: "You Can't Break My Spirit" is the quintessential story of the black man's conquest over slavery. Thanksgiving ... "Thank You For Giving" will warm your heart as if it was a flaming charcoal on a cool summer night. Tragic: Tragedy... like death is a constant reminder of our immortality and "Untimely Death" will evoke tears and drown your eyes with compassion. Comedic: "Ugly Like A Truck" begs for laughter as this woman describes her man as "Ugly Like A Truck." Ironic: nothing expresses irony like this prophecy, "A Messiah Is Coming" directed at President Barrack Obama. There's the poem "One Nation Under Oprah" which cleverly frames Oprah Winfrey's rise from the depths of the Mississippi Delta to the queen of talk show television, and her all girls' school in South Africa. Christmas: There is no other poem that expresses "Christmastime In New York City" like this poem. The children's genre ... seemingly every child claims to have had "A Fly In My Soup." 48 POEMS is a gold mine of love and language that is nothing short of a brilliant literary work that promotes literacy, academics and advances scholarship into the next millennium.

If you treasure me, I do, Then I know you love me too. Together we're a great surprise, I can see it in your eyes. And many said it wasn't so. That you love me and I know. Love me with your heart and breath, And I will love you 'til my death. I cast my eyes without a sound, Love at first sight is what I found. Deeper than the valley covered in snow, The love we share no one could know. Yonder sets the sun, my dear ... Sweet things only is what we hear. Love with your heart to go, My love for you I will show. First we met as separate parts, Now together as one heart. Over the mountains, through the trees, Night has fallen, but I shall not leave. Dawn has arrived and the sun is low, I love you, I love you, and I will not go. Love me with your heart. 11.18.08\ Enchanted Island Enchanted island is my private place, And you get can only get there ... If I want you to enter that space. To even touch me there, First and foremost ... You must be something special. My enchanted island is not zone free, To even get near my island, You must possess the golden key. There is only one of those golden keys, So if you are fortunate enough to get it ... Try not to lose it. My enchanted island, where the climate is always warm, And those who have experienced this island ... Call it the calm before the storm. Like a strong heart that throbs, As the morning dew is moist, This island is a sanctuary. If you should wake one morning And discover that you have the golden key, Come ... Stop by ... and visit, My enchanted island. 10.28.08 I Kissed Him On A Grand Piano I kissed him for the very first time, As I ran my fingers through his hair. I kissed him for the very first time, As I floated through the air. I kissed him in the living room, Against the stairwell banner. I kissed him under the crystal chandelier, And on the Grand Piano. I kissed him again, In the very same manner. I kissed him very long, On a Grand Piano. My heart was pounding My knees were shaking ... The sweet smell of love Was the only thing baking. Now that I love you, I will close my door. You are the man of my dreams, And ... I shall look no more. 2.13.09 I Kissed Her For The Very First Time I kissed her for the very first time, As I looked into her eyes. I kissed her for the first time, And my nerves were swelling like hives. I rubbed her cheeks, And she touched mine. I kissed, she kissed, To what seemed like the end of time. Hold me tight and never let go, I'll never forget this day. You're my queen in shining armor, my love, And I will never go away. I kissed her near the kitchen sink, I kissed her in the living room. I kissed her on the front door step, Beneath the gleaming moon. I lay in bed, And ran it through my head, As the night grew dark and dim. I never really kissed her at all ... I simply had a crush on her. 10.28.08 I Love The Rose When the rose falls, The seasons change. There is so much debate, About its name. A rose is but a rose, By any other name. It comes and it goes, Without refrain. Unlike the rose, People are filled with deceit. The rose is pure; And can never be beat. I love the rose. 01.01.00\ Chapter Two\ Dramatic \ You Can't Break My Spirit Journey To The Unknown Dancing With The Devil A Victim Of Circumstances By Force Of Habit I Do What I Gotta Do\ You Can't Break My Spirit In your deep blue devilish eyes, I am nothing but a slave. You dragged me into this country, As if I were an animal ... Living inside a cave. You can't break my spirit. I survived the pain and suffering, In spite of famine and disease. I stared you in the face of death, And never begged please. You can't break my spirit. When your belly was full, And your ship set sail, The journey to America, Was a living hell. You can't break my spirit. You beat me with your whips, You even busted my lips. When I approached you like a man, You saw it fit to break my hand. You can't break my spirit. I am well now, and better than ever. My spirit is strong, and my soul is unbreakable. My people said no to genocide ... Yes, I am a black man ... and not your black slave. You can't break my spirit. 10.27.08 Journey To The Unkown My journey is to the unknown, As I brave the morning dew. My journey is to the unknown, I'm not afraid of you! Threaten me with your words, And anger me with your lies. My courage is beyond reproach, I will never miss a stride. My journey is to the unknown, As the world stops and stands. My journey is to the unknown ... And I'm the better man. 01.01.05 Dancing With The Devil So you want to be rich, So you sold your soul. Now you're dancing with the devil, On a red hot stove. The devil bought your soul, For a little money, power, and fame. Now you think you're above the law, Because you adopted the devil's name. You toot your little horn, 'Cause you think you are the best. But you will soon find out ... That money won't get you out of this mess. Sin is your name, And you think you are ahead of the game. Fortune is what you seek, And a whole lot of fame. You step on people everywhere you go, It won't be very long, Before your bottom hits the floor. When the devil comes around, And your name is called, I pity you, my friend ... Because you are going to have a very long fall. As a matter of fact, Here comes the devil now. And he's calling your name. And guess what? The devil does not accept money. The devil only collects souls. And the devil is dancing today, And he has come to collect your soul. 10.29.08 A Victim Of Circumstances I am a victim of circumstances, Born in a world full of greed. I am a victim of circumstances, Fighting to be freed. Politicians are making promises, People are dying every day, Racism is on the rise, There's got to be a better way. All men are created equal, Says the constitution. But if things don't get any better, I can guarantee you ... There will be another revolution. Have I killed? Would I kill? Will I kill? Did I kill? I ... am a victim of circumstances. 10.23.94 By Force Of Habit I grew up in a world ... Where violence is the name. I fought every day, And was forced to join a gang. I have skills ... Skills that I would like to sell. The world will never see them ... Because I'm locked inside this cell. Why am I so angry? The high society would ask. Try to understand me ... My problems are deep and vast. If I fight today, The people will say I'm lazy. If I fight tomorrow, The people say I'm crazy. I say it's ... By Force of Habit. 10.23.94 I Do What I Gotta Do I do what I gotta do, Whether it is morning, noon, or night. I do what I gotta do ... Sometimes wrong and sometimes right. There are those who fear me ... And there are those who respect me. To me, it's all the same. Man comes in with nothing ... Man leaves with nothing ... We are all given but one life. You can live it, or you can let Someone live it for you. I choose to live it. And that's why ... I do what I gotta do. 10.23.94\ Chapter Three\ Thanksgiving \ Thank You For Giving On Thanksgiving Day Everybody Say Amen This Turkey Is For You Thank You For Being My Friend A Time for Giving\ Thank You For Giving Thank you for giving me This wonderful meal. Eating with my family, Is such a thrill. My whole family is well, And their children are healthy. We are one happy family, And no ... we're not even wealthy. Thank you for giving me This wonderful life. The table was set perfectly, By my beautiful wife. You gave us plenty of food, And that is a blessing. Pass me that turkey ... And the big, big bowl of dressing. Thank you for giving me This Thanksgiving Day. Now we eat as a family ... And together we pray. 10.31.08 On Thanksgiving Day On Thanksgiving Day, The children play, And anticipation in the air. The turkey in the oven, The cakes are baked, And the sweet smell is everywhere. Pull up a table, Pull up a chair, It's time to give a few blows. Don't try to pretend, By sitting at the end, Now pass me the new dominoes. The game has started, The food is ready, And I don't have time to beg. Don't try to cheat, When I leave my seat, To get me a turkey leg. 11.03.08 Everybody Say Amen When times are hard, We all split apart, But we are all back together again ... Everybody say amen. Everybody say amen, For the food we are about to eat. Everybody say amen, For the cornbread, and the wheat. Let's us not forget, Our brothers and the Indians, Who bravely fought to the end ... Everybody say, amen. Everybody say amen, And hope that all violence will cease. Everybody say amen, And hope that one day; We will all live in peace. Everybody says amen. 10.31.08 This Turkey Is For You Lord, look at that turkey, It is a heck of a beast. Pass me some of that gravy, I'm ready for this feast. This turkey is cooked, All the way through. Sit down and relax, This turkey is for you. This turkey is for you, And that's no bull. Eat as much as you can, Until your belly is full. Just because you're homeless, And your family is gone, This turkey is for you, And you're not alone. Life can be hard, And your world can be blue. Mr. Supreme prepared this turkey ... And this turkey is for you. 11.02.08 Thank You For Being My Friend Thank you for being my friend today, Even though I don't know your name. We pass each other Every day of the week, And your smile is always the same. Thank you for being my friend today, Even though we speak different languages. I was hungry and not rude, And you shared your food, And helped me on my way. Thank you for being a friend today, I will never forget your kindness. We take things for granted, Because we live on this planet, What else can I say? Thank you for being my friend. 11.03.08\ (Continues...)\ \ \ \ \ Excerpted from 48 POEMS by Gregory L.
