Sekine (ethics and Hebrew Bible, U, of Tokyo) provides a unique comparative study of Greek and Hebrew ethical thought, using primary and secondary texts, and incorporating Eastern perspectives and commentary. Sekine starts with the practical philosophy of the ancient Greeks, including the thought of the pre-Socratics, Socrates, the Sophists and Plato. He focuses here on Aristotle's concepts of happiness, ethical excellence, the doctrines of the mean and virtue, intellectual excellence and contemplation. He then turns to the religious ethics of the ancient Hebrews, from the Ten Commandments (especially the first and the sixth through the tenth), to the legal codes of the Book of the Covenant, the Deuteronomic Code and the Holiness Code, and then to the wisdom literature of Proverbs and the Book of Job. He closes with an evaluation of the consequences of Hellenic and Hebrew ethics, including retribution ethics, atonement ideology, and views on love and righteousness.
