He identifies the most important innovation in the fifth edition as the disk, which contains exercises that can be printed, filled out, and turned in as well as demonstrations of exercises and auxiliary information such as map indexes and incidental notes on some recordings. Other changes include some material on acoustics and the incorporation of articulatory phonology, which can describe speech as a sequence of movements. The disk requires Microsoft Windows.
