This wide-ranging and authoritative book is the most informative sociology dictionary of its kind available. Compiled by a team of sociology experts, it is packed with over 2,500 entries. Each entry is elaborated with a clear description and in-depth analysis, and real-life examples are given wherever possible. Coverage is extensive, and includes terms from the related fields of psychology, economics, anthropology, philosophy, and political science. This new edition, edited by Professor John Scott, has been revised to bring the dictionary completely up to date while retaining the concise, clear editorial quality of the previous editions. New features include boxed-in entries covering key aspects of sociology and weblinks to quality sociological websites. Seventy new entries cover everything from adaptation to orientalism. This edition also contains a range of new biographies covering key figures, such as Gilles Deleuze and Erich Fromm. It is both an invaluable introduction to sociology for beginners and a useful aid for more advanced students and teachers. Library Journal This third edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Sociology, first published in 1994, contains more than 2500 A-to-Z entries, 70 of them updated with such newly relevant topics as "Internet" and "Cyber Ethnography." Editors Scott (president, British Sociological Assoc.; Power) and Marshall (vice chancellor, Univ. of Reading, UK) have assembled a fine team of primarily British contributors, sociological experts and academics who do an excellent job of defining and describing a theory, school, or movement-its main thrust as well as important theorists, e.g., French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, and what they contributed not only in the field of sociology but also in psychology, economics, anthropology, philosophy, and political science. The length of entries ranges from two sentences to two pages. Included in these entries, as part of the text, are titles to major monographs. Bottom Line One quibble with this new edition concerns sloppy editing: internal See Also's are not used consistently, there are some errors in punctuation, and there is at least one instance of an uncapitalized author's name. These errors make it harder for the reader to understand the entry but are not so frequent that they negate the overall effectiveness and usefulness of the dictionary. Recommended for all academic libraries.-Cynthia Johnson, Pratt Inst. Libs., Brooklyn Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
