Editors Scott (president, British Sociological Assoc.; Power) and Marshall (vice chancellor, Univ. of Reading, UK) have assembled a fine team of primarily British contributors, sociological experts and academics who do an excellent job of defining and describing a theory, school, or movement-its main thrust as well as important theorists, e.g., French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, and what they contributed not only in the field of sociology but also in psychology, economics, anthropology, philosophy, and political science. The length of entries ranges from two sentences to two pages. Included in these entries, as part of the text, are titles to major monographs. Bottom Line One quibble with this new edition concerns sloppy editing: internal See Also's are not used consistently, there are some errors in punctuation, and there is at least one instance of an uncapitalized author's name. These errors make it harder for the reader to understand the entry but are not so frequent that they negate the overall effectiveness and usefulness of the dictionary.
