An introduction to the genius with a curious mind who loved to experiment and who invented the phonograph, light bulb, movie camera, and numerous other items.Children's LiteratureAdler seems to have developed a near-perfect formula for picture book biographies. From presidents to explorers to civil rights leaders, this series does a fine job introducing the lives of famous people to curious young listeners and readers. This recent entry, focusing on the busy Thomas Alva Edison, does another fine job of balancing the right amount of fact, personal life and history. Readers with no prior knowledge of Edison' role in history will come away from this book with a nice foundation. The Wallners' line and watercolor illustrations are busy enough to maintain interest, while still simple enough to appeal to even the youngest viewers.

This greatly simplified and shortened biography does not afford much insight into Edison's character, but focuses on the highlights of the man's life and career achievements. By depicting well-chosen incidents, Adler and the Wallners provide interesting glimpses of an inquisitive youth who grew into a hard-working visionary. An adequate introduction with appeal for reluctant readers and very young listeners.-Marilyn Taniguchi, Santa Monica Public Library, CA\ \
