\ From The CriticsReviewer: Edward Abraham, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)\ Description: This book covers foot and ankle surgical techniques in the adult.\ Purpose: The purpose is to present the most recent proven advances in surgical procedures. These most important objectives are met in most instances.\ Audience: The book is written for general orthopedists, foot and ankle subspecialists and orthopedic residents. Podiatrists can also benefit from this work. The four orthopedist editors are all fully qualified to write on this subject. They are supported by many contributors.\ Features: The book is divided into nine sections and most diagnoses are covered. The section on arthritis deals with the important topic of total ankle arthroplasty. Special attention is given to the second toe instability and angulation. The section on athletic injuries is thorough. On the Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal, the author stresses the importance of not using a cannulated screw to fix the fracture. This is one of several instances where the chapter author's personal experience and preference drives the treatment solution to a given problem. There is less coverage of what others may do for a given problem, with the result that there is minimal use of references. Postoperative complications are given special attention. Each chapter ends with a list of useful ICD-9 & CPT billing codes to assist the treating physician. The photographs of radiographs and drawings are of good quality, but the intraoperative pictures are not as useful as the drawings.\ Assessment: The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) have pooled their resources to produce this first technique-focused textbook. The AAOS plans to publish a series of works in different areas for the orthopedic community. I strongly recommend this book to all surgeons caring for patients with foot and ankle problems. Medical libraries are encouraged to have this work available for their readers.\ \ \ 3 Stars from Doody\ \
