This undergraduate textbook provides a framework for understanding AIDS, discussing the disease from both biomedical and psychosocial perspectives. The book addresses molecular and cellular aspects of HIV, the immune system's response to it, the disease's epidemiology, and individual and social implications of infection. This edition appropriately updates the rapidly evolving biomedical and epidemiological sections on HIV/AIDS. Purpose: As outlined by the authors, this book provides an overview of the biological, psychological, and social aspects of HIV/AIDS. It is patterned after a similar course entitled AIDS Fundamentals offered at the University of California, Irvine. Audience: The book is primarily aimed at undergraduate students and other nonspecialized students who have had high school level biology. The book would be unsuitable for general readers without this minimum qualification. The authors:two researchers in virology (mainly retroviruses) and an associate professor in Planning, Policy and Design at the University of California, Irvine:are credible experts in most of the areas reviewed in the book. Features: The book covers the molecular and cellular aspects of HIV, the immune system's response to the virus and then reviews the epidemiology as it pertains to the understanding of these aspects. This is followed by a discussion of the personal and societal implications of HIV/AIDS from prevention to diagnosis and subsequent discrimination. The book is enhanced by black-and-white diagrams and photos and a Web-based resource that summarizes each chapter, provides links to AIDS-related Web sites and provides review questions for each chapter. Although the reference section also cites Web-based sources, this section is limited by the uncertain source of many of the statistics and diagrams. Assessment: The new edition is justified given the rapidly evolving field of HIV/AIDS and provides a brief overview for the undergraduate or nonspecialized students interested in the fundamentals of HIV/AIDS.
