This comprehensive atlas depicts the entire range of normal variants seen on neuroradiologic images, helping radiologists "decode" appearances that can be misdiagnosed as pathology. The book features nearly 900 radiographs that show normal variants seen on plain film, MR, CT, and angiographic images, plus accompanying line drawings that demonstrate normal angiogram patterns and other pertinent anatomy. Dr. Jinkins, a well-known neuroradiologist, takes a multimodality approach to the cranium, sella, orbit, face, sinuses, neck, and spine. In an easy-to-follow format, he provides the information radiologists need to identify unusual features...assess their significance...avoid unnecessary, expensive studies...and minimize exposure and risk. It is intended as a clear and concise explanation of the embryology and anatomy of the skull, spine, CNS, and neck for neuroradiologists and other neuroscientists. Anatomy and embryology are addressed well enough for clinical neuroradiologists or anyone else interested in neuroimaging, but the detail necessary for scientists involved in study of anatomy at a finer level than can be currently imaged is not provided. The diagrams and images are of high quality and the editor's points are demonstrated well, but the small amount of text usually adds little to the understanding of the anatomy. The anatomy of the spine, skull, neck, brain, spinal cord, and CNS vasculature are well covered with the helpful inclusion of common variants. The book contains a few errors in labeling diagrams and a few inconsistencies, which are probably due to the multiple contributors and the difficulty of proofreading the large number of images and diagrams. Overall, the book is a consistent presentation of the most commonly taught theories of embryology and anatomy, but the editor does not include explanation of areas of controversy, such as development of the corpus callosum or the location of nerves in the jugular foramen. Although other books cover smaller anatomical regions of interest to the neuroradiologist in greater detail, this book encompasses all regions of anatomy, which are the concern of the neuroradiologist. This collection makes a handy one-source reference book and should be useful in the reading room, especially for residents or others not fully trained in neuroradiology.
