\ Children's Literature\ - Barbara L. Talcroft\ Dance is an appealing topic for pre- and early teens. Who doesn't want to make those fabulous moves? This set of "Snap" books explores six forms of movement popular with kids (modern dance being conspicuously absent). In four or five chapters and conversational prose, each volume tells a bit about the genre's history, shows vital steps and moves, and usually spotlights a successful performer. Heavy on recommending individuality and confidence, the authors also stress taking classes and lots of practice. Ballroom, of course, requires partners—a man and a woman—thus emphasizing coordination and teamwork skills. Concentrating on the International style, the author describes (as photographs picture) "standard" dances like the basic waltz, the showy Viennese waltz, the foxtrot, the quickstep, and the dramatic tango, while admonishing girls to let their partners lead, even if they know the dance better; that is the man's responsibility. For Latin dances, couples may not always be in the "closed position" and do not move around the floor counterclockwise. With their flashier costumes and exotic origins (Cuba, Spain, Brazil), the Latin dances are lively, flirty, or bouncy except for the bullfight-based paso doble. What is next when couples are proficient? Freese describes ballroom competitions, their strict dress codes, and the criteria for judging; color photographs let readers see some of the elegant gowns and glitter-spangled Latin outfits worn in competition. A friendly format, lots of color, and encouraging words will attract middle readers—just so they do not forget the endless practice and grueling work behind the dreams. Reviewer: Barbara L.
