\ Children's LiteratureThis book, part of the "Exploring the World" series, tells about Cabot's voyage to Newfoundland in search of a western route to the orient. Doak explains why Cabot's voyage was important and what contributions the voyage made to exploration. The book is well designed in layout and appropriately placed pictures help readers further understand the text by showing relevant places, people, or historical paintings related to John Cabot and his voyage. The book also includes a glossary, a did-you-know facts section, important dates, important people, other books, Web sites, museums, and an index for readers who need or want to find out more information. These tools at the back of the book are perfect "extras" for kids who are doing biography reports. A similar book, John Cabot by Tanya Larkin, is part of the "Famous Explorers" series, which seems to be written for a higher audience than the layout. Thus, a lot of the information is lost through the poor choice of wording and layout. However, in this "Exploring the World" book, the layout matches the information so the reader can understand the ideas as well as the choice of illustrations. Doak has written a great source for book reports on John Cabot. 2003, Compass Point Books, \ — Joella Peterson\ \ \ \ \ School Library JournalGr 4-6-Each of these series titles presents basic information on the subject's early life, his motivations, and highlights of his more important expeditions. The accessible texts provide historical context: they are rich with information on the relationships between these explorers and contemporary figures. Doak also discusses the impact the arrival these men and their fleets had on native peoples. The author is careful to indicate when few historical documents exist and what historians have deduced from other supporting evidence. Plentiful, average-quality photos and reproductions illustrate these accessible titles.-Jennifer England, The Berkeley Carroll School, Brooklyn, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.\ \
