Chapter 52\ \ \ They woke up about the same time. They had been up late the night before and it was a great luxury to be able to sleep in this morning. They were under the blankets and Michael had one of his legs over Jonathan's legs.\ "Jonathan, it feels so good to be snuggled up with you this morning. We can just enjoy the time together. I'm glad I decided not to sing today. We can spend a leisurely morning together, have a nice quiet breakfast and pack the car for the cabin trip and then head to church where we can relax. I've never sat with you at Mass in the congregation before."\ "That's right. I am looking forward to have you sitting next to me today. Let's sit way up front. I love looking at the artwork on the altar. The crucifix is one of the nicest I've ever seen. We can even walk around and take in the Stations of the Cross. And today I won't be so nervous because I'll know that you're not coming up to the plate. You'll be with me. Every time you sang I was more nervous than I think you were."\ "Jonathan, your hair is growing. Theresa was right. And now that you're not going back, you can let your hair grow. By Christmas, your hair will be as long and as beautiful as it was when I first saw you."\ Jonathan rolled over on top of Michael and pinned his wrists to the bed over his head.\ "I'm going to tease you until you're crazy with passion and then I'm going to stop," he said as he began rubbing his penis against Michael's stomach. He could feel Michael get hard and he felt Michael's penis sliding up and down the crack of his butt. "You like this, don't you?"\ "Yes," Michael said. "You could make me crazy. You really could. I want you so. I always want you."\ "Good. That's what I like to hear. I like to hear how much you like all the things I do to you."\ They could hear Louisa, Anthony and Rosa setting the table in the dinning room. When there was time on Sunday mornings with no nervous soloists, they usually had a big breakfast. Louisa liked to bring out the old waffle iron she got as a wedding present and make her favorite, and everyone else's, recipe. They always had fresh-squeezed orange juice, hickory-smoked breakfast sausage, scrambled eggs with cream cheese, mushroom and onions. Anthony liked to have red and green peppers sautéed with some Italian hot sausage as well. Louisa used the special coffee she bought on Main Street from Beans and Things instead of the regular coffee she used everyday from the A&P.\ "I can smell some wonderful coffee, Michael. Almost as tempting as your smelly armpit. Yum!"\ "You are a little pig and that's partly why I love you."\ "Are we supposed to shower and dress before breakfast or what?"\ "Not really. We just go to the dinning room in robes and slippers. With only one bathroom, half of us are ready to go out into the world and the other half is not quite ready. Or we could put on dungarees and sweatshirts if that would make you more comfortable."\ "Yeah, Michael. That definitely would make me feel more comfortable."\ There was a light tap of the door.\ "It's me, Louisa. Breakfast is ready whenever you are. If you're decent, I have two cups of piping hot coffee for you and I'll bring it in and leave it on the desk."\ "Thanks, Mom. Please come in."\ Louisa went into the bedroom and put the small tray on the desk.\ "Good morning, Mrs. Manganaro. Thank you," Jonathan said.\ "You're welcome, Jonathan. I'll just open this window a crack and let in some fresh air."\ "Good morning, Mom. Thanks."\ "Whenever you're ready, come on into the dinning room. Dress any way you want to."\ As she was leaving the room, she bent over and kissed Michael. She left and closed the door behind her.\ Michael reached over to Jonathan and held him in his arms. Michael slowly rubbed his hand up and down Jonathan's back and felt the smoothness of his butt. They kissed.\ "Michael, let's have some coffee and join the others. They must be expecting us or your mother wouldn't have come in with the coffee."\ "You're right as usual, Jonathan. Wait till I get you in the cabin. We'll have some real privacy. I can yell as loud as I like and you won't have to cover my mouth."\ "You have the capacity to keep me aroused and excited. Did you know that?"\ "Yes," he said and he reached down and felt Jonathan's erection.\ "Damn," Jonathan said as he stood up and stepped into his dungarees and forced his stiff penis into the left leg of his dungarees and zipped them up.\ "Jonathan, later you can make me scream out loud. I want you so badly that way."\ "It will be nice to be alone with just each other, without wondering who might be listening."\ "I know. Here I know how thin the walls are and in Taylorville I sometimes feel all of New York can peep into the gigantic windows, even though I know that's not possible because you are so high up nobody could see in, particularly since all the rooms are surrounded by terraces. But it still feels so public."\ "We really haven't been alone. Even in Florida, where we had such a lovely intimate experience, I was afraid that a maid or somebody would burst in at any moment."\ They had breakfast and packed the car with food, shovels, sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, kerosene, matches, some dry wood and some special lime mix for the outhouse. They put two pairs of boots for the long walk through the snow. Michael put the top down and the passenger seat down, too. That way they were able to put two ladders over the back of the passenger seat and across the back seat. Jonathan would sit in the back seat behind Michael and hold the ladders.\ "Michael, I'm going to freeze back here, at least you have the heater in the front."\ "It's only about twenty miles. Put a hat on and cover yourself with one of the blankets." Michael laughed. "Candy ass."\ They parked near the end of the parking lot of the church, which today was not crowded. They found seats in the third row on St. Mary's side. They saw Theresa on their way in. She was with her uncle. Michael knelt first and folded his hands. Jonathan knelt right next to him. Their knees touched. Jonathan wondered what Michael was praying about. His own prayer was far from simple. He wanted to be as happy as he was at that moment forever. He wanted his father to be in heaven. He wanted Lillian to completely recover. He wanted to be in Michael's arms until the end of time. Unless it was absolutely necessary he never wanted to sleep alone again. He knew how difficult it was going to be when Michael went back to the service. Damn it. I guess, he thought, you're not supposed to curse when you're praying. Cool it, or God won't listen. This praying is not supposed to be a negotiation. Dear God, You have something very special to give me. I know it and I can't fathom what it could be. But please, forgive my selfishness and let me follow Your will. I will take care of those You have put close to me. I promise I will. I'll take care of Your servant, Michael. Even though Your Church has taught us that homosexuality is wrong, I don't believe You would disapprove of me and Michael. I feel that You would want us together. We need each other. You will help him become a great success in the music world. I know he will honor and praise You with his music, with his voice. We need You. You have always helped us, particularly as it related to living with this strong attraction to men we both have had and the courage to live with it. And I thank You for giving me a companion to share the rest of my life with.\ Michael felt Jonathan's thigh next to his and didn't move his own away. The sun was streaming in the east windows across the congregation and altar. The different colors were like a rainbow. God must be beauty. Beautiful flowers, music, people, animals. God must love the earth. The mountains surrounding Mellon had to be the work of a divine God who loved beautiful things. The trees that covered the land were magnificent. The Hudson River was probably the most beautiful river in the entire world. The Great Lakes were like treasured jewels. And most of all, the most beautiful thing You created beside Your Son, Jesus, was sitting right beside me, right now. I love him so. Thank You, dear Father in heaven. Thank You very much. I appreciate this gift and will cherish him always. Please keep Your sight on us always. I pray this prayer in the name of Your Son, Jesus. Bye for now. Michael sat back in the pew and blew his nose.
