\ Children's Literature - Ellen Welty\ Canada is a multicultural country, rich in the combined heritage of many peoples. This accessible book, part of "The Lands, Peoples, and Cultures" series, does an admirable job of touching briefly on the various cultures that make up the patchwork quilt that is Canada. Beginning with Native Canadians, the text and numerous photos illustrate the lives of Canada's many native tribes (or "bands," as they are called in Canada). While the book does not dwell on the hardships faced by the native peoples after the arrival of Europeans, neither does it shrink from describing the effects of disease and war that decimated their numbers or the poverty and racism that are still problems today. The influence of the French, in particular, will interest U.S. readers because of the political differences and dual-language signs. This book includes chapters about cuisine, country and city life, education, and sports, as well as a chapter that looks to the future. Its usefulness in the classroom is evident, and readers will enjoy the beautiful photographs throughout the book. Includes a glossary and an index, but no bibliography. Reviewer: Ellen Welty\ \
