PREFACE\ Criminal Investigations: A Scenario -Based Text for Police Recruits and Officers is designed to enhance the understanding of basic criminal investigations by use of real-life scenarios. It is geared towards the practical application of investigative tools, concepts, and protocols.\ I wrote this text after having taught the subject for over nine years at the community college where I teach both academic and academy students and have found that, with slight modification, this basic investigation course material is suitable for both audiences. ORIENTATION AND ORGANIZATION\ The material in this book can be found in most texts on the subject as it is based upon general investigation concepts and practices that are taught across the nation. This text is different in that it takes a proactive approach to the learning experience.\ Criminal Investigations: A Scenario-Based Text for Police Recruits and Officers involves the student directly by placing students into a scenario and then challenging the student to respond as if they were on the scene. This technique is based upon core principles of adult learning theory Each chapter topic is reinforced with a quiz and a crossword puzzle for the student to complete.\ This workbook has been field-tested in both academy and academic setting with great success. The last group of police academy students scored an average of 93 percent on a comprehensive final examination that was prepared outside the control of the author. Both groups of students reported that the text assisted them greatly in their understanding of the subject. INSTRUCTOR MANUAL\ The instructor's edition of theworkbook includes a suggested syllabus and schedule for both academic and academy-based courses. It also provides answers to the scenario questions, quizzes, and crossword puzzles as well as suggestions for practical exercises and ideas on how to obtain materials for the exercises. A comprehensive midterm and final examination are also provided in this edition. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS\ I would first like to thank my wife Margit for her patience, understanding, and assistance during the writing of this text. This textbook would not have become a reality without the constant support and assistance of Kim Davies, Sara Holle, and Cheryl Adam from Prentice Hall, and Debbie Goodman from Metro Dade Community College. I would also like to thank Alexia Tlumacki, the Police Academy Classes and Criminal justice academic students of Seminole Community College who field-tested the work.
