\ Reviewer: Julie A. Stanik-Hutt, PhD, ACNP, CCNS(Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)\ Description: "This fifth edition of this Critical Care Nursing Certification (CCRN) preparation text replaces the outdated version published in 1998. It follows a systems approach and major CCRN exam sections based on the published test blueprint. "\ Purpose: The purpose is to assist CCRN examination candidates increase their knowledge in areas of weakness while refreshing their memory of more familiar content. It is not an exhaustive review, but is a worthwhile resource for any critical care exam preparation. It serves its stated objective well. \ Audience: The book is written at a level appropriate for registered nurses. Since it is only a short review, previous knowledge of the concepts is essential. The editors are published experts in critical care nursing and the contributors hold relevant advanced academic degrees and certifications. \ Features: "The book is divided into nine major sections based on a systems approach. Within each section short chapters review anatomy and physiology, diagnosis and treatment of system related problems, and common critical care issues. Each section ends with a practice test related to that system. The AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care is briefly reviewed for those not familiar with it. Two comprehensive, integrated practice exams, with correct answers (and references back to chapters where relevant content is found), are included. "\ Assessment: "This updated version includes revised information on MODS, cardiovascular and pulmonary problems, and on mechanical ventilation. Surprisingly, information on solid organ transplantation appears to be out of date. Helpful hints are provided about what is new on the examination. For individuals who already have some background in critical care nursing, this would be another useful resource (in a very crowded field) for CCRN examination preparation. "\ \
