Introduction\ The term "inflammatory bowel disease" (IBD) refers to Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, two closely related conditions that cause persistent or recurring inflammation of one or more parts of the intestine. Crohn's disease is named after the late Dr. Burrill Crohn of New York, who was one of the first people to describe this disease in medical literature. Whereas Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal system, from the mouth to the anus, ulcerative colitis occurs only in the colon (large intestine). \ Although these diseases are common, it is only in the past ten to fifteen years that it has become acceptable to talk about them publicly. Heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer have been freely discussed for many years, but no one wanted to hear about diarrhea, bloody bowel movements, or the need for frequent, urgent trips to the bathroom. The causes of these conditions are unknown. For years they were thought to be due to stress, but this is not the case. There is no known cure for Crohn's disease; ulcerative colitis can be cured, but only by surgical removal of the whole colon, including the rectum.\ IBD can start at any age, but usually begins in the late teens or early adulthood or — less often — in middle age. Both Crohn's and ulcerative colitis are sometimes associated with a variety of medical problems outside of the intestine, including arthritis, skin conditions, kidney stones, cancer, and gallstones, among others.\ Managing a chronic disease requires a team effort, and the team consists of the patient (and possibly the patient's family), the doctor (and possibly additional doctors), and sometimes other healthcare professionals. If patients are taught which problems they can treat (or at least start to treat) themselves, and which ones should be promptly reported, they achieve a greater degree of independence. For many patients, this means being able to go about their daily lives without worry.\ This book, which is aimed primarily at patients and their families, provides a comprehensive review of IBD. Every effort has been made to avoid complex medical terminology. When such terms are necessary, definitions are provided in the text or in the glossary.\ Topics covered include the signs, symptoms, and complications of IBD; nutritional issues, including lactose intolerance and other causes of gas and diarrhea; standard and newer drug treatments; surgery, with explanations of both minor and major operations; problems relating particularly to children with IBD; and various issues affecting everyday life, as well as self-help strategies for dealing with them.\ Remember, this book is designed to educate you, not to frighten you. Having IBD can be difficult, but you can learn to live with it - and to fight back. This book will help you do that.
