Arkarian, the 600-year-old mentor of the nine "Named" guardians of Veridian, is taken captive by the minions of the Goddess, Lathenia. Against the direct order of Lathenia's twin brother who is likewise her bitter enemy, Lorian, Isabel and her cohorts break through the rift between worlds to the underworld—a dark, desolate, land where the odds are stacked against any of them to return alive. Before they leave, however, they spend a lot of time arguing over who will go on what mission, and whose powers are more fully developed. Meanwhile, Chaos is creeping into the word. The prime symptom of oncoming doom seems to be the fact that high school students have begun to show careless disregard for the dress code. Lathenia controls the forces of the dark while her brother, Lorian, fights with the Named, nine ordinary humans with extraordinary gifts, to stop her. In this book, Arkarian, one of the most powerful of the Named, has been abducted and imprisoned by Lathenia in the furthest reaches of the Underworld. Isabel and Ethan, ordinary high school students by day and Guardians of Time by night, decide to attempt a rescue, joined by Isabel's brother Matt, newly Named but still untested and untrained in any special gift. Meanwhile, various combinations of the Named carry out several missions, visiting medieval France to protect the child who will become Arkarian's mother, and ancient Rome to prevent injury to Octavius, future emperor. Plot action dominates this story, with awkward attempts to add romance to the tangled relationships among the main characters. The novel is poorly written, with sentence fragments and awkward constructions popping up throughout. There is an incongruous use of knees and fists by characters who can send energy bolts from their fingertips, but it does give Isabel ample practice in using her gift of healing power on all the broken bones and bleeding wounds. Ultimately, several loose ends are tied up, but new questions arise that will presumably be addressed in the next installment of this series. There is enough action and excitement here to keep nondiscriminating readers involved, but little else.-Susan L. The Goddess of Chaos, irate that the Guardians of Time defeated her lover Marduke, abducts Arkarian, the ageless wizard of the Guard, and imprisons him in a dark dimension of unending torture. Although the Immortal leader of the Guard expressly forbids any rescue attempt, three of the Named-the impetuous Ethan, his former Apprentice Isabel, and Isabel's brother Matt-dare to go after their mentor. Their ventures through medieval France, ancient Rome, and finally the nightmarish underworld, would be laughably anachronistic and badly sketched were they not so clearly secondary to the heart-wringings of teenage angst. Will Isabel and Arkarian ever acknowledge that they are soulmates, or will his eternal youth and her former crush on Ethan get in the way? Will Ethan and Matt ever reconcile their friendship, torn apart over the traitor they both loved? And who could be Arkarian's father? Pure soap-opera fluff with only the lightest sprinkling of the fantastic; but fans will eat it up with a spoon. (Fantasy. YA)\ \
