Destiny by Design is a tribute to one of the great engineering accomplishments of the twentieth century featuring over 160 never before published photographs. Jeremy Snapp's photo essay, narrative and traditional book design present a dual celebration. While the photographs themselves show the construction of the canal, the sources of the photos represent several generations of the author's family. Gerald F. Sherman was a photographer/engineer who was granted extensive access to the construction sites. Also included are contemporary images of historic Canal Zone sites. These photos by author Jeremy Snapp represent both a sense of closure to the "American century" on the isthmus and the dawning of a new era for the Panamanian people. Today the Panama Canal remains the most significant of all man-made waterways in the evolution of the Americas.
