\ Children's LiteratureChock-full of activities and reproducibles to supplement the teaching of the Dewy Decimal System, teachers and librarians will find some useful ideas here. Organized as a progressive guide, skills are labeled by grade level from PreK to Grade 6. Skills include number sequencing, simple alphabetizing, book categorization, using a computerized catalog, basic grouping by subject, general difference between fiction and nonfiction, and for older students, an introduction to Internet and Boolean searches. There are mazes, crossword puzzles, word searches and games such a Memory Match and Bingo, mysteries to solve, and a treasure hunt. Most activities are for the whole class or teams, and materials are readily available in most classrooms or libraries. The activities range from the practical and creative to the downright silly and ineffective but the librarian or teacher in need of a new idea or adaptable strategy should be able to glean some lessons worth trying. 2001, Alleyside Press, $16.95. Ages Adult. Reviewer:Beverley Fahey\ \ \ \ \ School Library JournalThis book, which attempts to provide ways to introduce youngsters from preschool through grade six to the fundamentals of subject classification, has major flaws. The first sentence explains, "We are in the Information Age." If this is indeed the case, why would we subject students to coloring flowers and attempting to recognize words such as parakeet and octopus and have them attempt to write these words, as they group them on petals of theme flowers? A library is a perfect laboratory situation for learning about arrangement of books. Worksheets, word search, and word unscramble cannot take the place of directed exploration in the library or media center. Some of the drawings such as how to read a bookshelf and illustrations of Boolean operators are helpful, but there are not enough "Information Age" activities to justify purchase. The lack of an index is an additional problem in a book of this type. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.\ \
