\ This recent "DLB" volume profiles 18 African and 12 Caribbean authors, only 3 of whom have been written about in this series before. Included is Derek Walcott, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1992; other familiar names are Chinua Achebe, Buchi Emecheta, and Jean Rhys. Nigeria (7 authors), South Africa (5), Ghana (5), and Guyana (5) are the most-represented countries. The Caribbean authors included are also of African heritage or are closely identified with it; Caribbean authors of Hispanic descent are covered in other "DLB" volumes As in other DLB volumes, each article begins with a list of the author's writings and ends with a bibliography of relevant critical writings. Articles trace the development of each writer's career and vary in length from 4 to 23 pages. All are interesting reading. Photographs, representations of book jackets and manuscript pages, quotations from works, etc., are used by way of illustration. The book ends with an appended article about autobiographical slave narratives and a bibliography on the larger subject of the volume. Articles are signed, and contributors' affiliations are given. There is a series index. A second volume on Caribbean and African writers is planned This volume is for all libraries that have made a commitment to the "DLB" series and for those whose patrons would be interested in these authors.\ \ \ \ \ Booknewsst:The series is cited in BCL3 and Sheehy. Thirty-one writers are profiled in this volume, each writer described in an extensive essay illustrated with photos and dust jacket or manuscript page reproductions and accompanied by bibliographies and references. Includes a cumulative index for the series. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)\ \
