\ PeopleEvery page of McCullin's book brings a shock of pleasure.\ \ \ \ \ Library JournalMcCullin (India) is a British photojournalist who has been taking exceptional pictures of people and conflicts since the 1950s. In 2003-04 he photographed the people of the Omo River basin in Ethiopia, near the Sudanese border. His fascination with the people of this region has resulted in a body of portraits of great richness, passion, and accomplishment. These group and individual portraits are especially eloquent in describing the tribe people's clothing, jewelry (in particular the fantastic adornments the women wear), and faces. Despite this wealth of surface detail, however, understanding who these people are by way of the photographs alone is prevented by the medium of photography itself-its amazing ability to describe but limited ability to explain. Included is a short essay by the photographer sketching some brief facts of the Omo River Basin tribes.
