Modern Bulgarian sounds are not very different from English, although the consonants are a little less energetically pronounced; and they also closely follow the way the language is written, making it one of the easier languages to speak. However, body language can be confusing: Bulgarians traditionally nod their heads up and down to signify no (neh), and from side to side to indicate yes (dah). As western influences increase, younger Bulgarians have adopted the opposite convention, to add to confusion!
