\ Library JournalThis hefty encyclopedia is packed with information an aquarium trade professional or ichthyologist would welcome. Axelrod, a tropical fish enthusiast who holds a Masters of Science in ichthyology, and avid fishkeeper Scott have divided the book into two parts. The first encompasses six chapters of general and specific fishkeeping information, and the second is made up of profiles of 1000 freshwater species. The authors start off with the history of ichthyology, which is followed by chapters on systematics, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, reproduction, and aquarium management. Subsequent chapters organize fish by family rather than in typical alphabetical fashion and discuss each in immense detail. Some 2800 full-color photographs of species in various aquarium habitats accompany the entries. Bottom Line Sometimes reading more like an advanced scientific textbook than a standard-use encyclopedia, this would certainly be a one-book-covers-all purchase for a large public library with a significantly advanced science and hobbyist collection. Smaller public libraries and/or academic libraries with horticulture and landscaping courses might be better off purchasing David Alderton's lower-priced yet still comprehensive Encyclopedia of Aquarium and Pond Fish (DK).-Susan E.
