Working with the assistance of distinguished scholar and advisory editor Emmanuel S. Nelson, the volume editors have assembled nearly 200 alphabetically arranged entries by more than 130 expert contributors. Because of the sustained interest in works by women writers and the centrality of many of these works to the curriculum, high school libraries will need this essential reference. Public libraries supporting research in this area will also find it a valuable guide to the rich tradition of life writing by women and to the wider realm of gender studies. Library Journal From "Autoethnography" to the "Self-Help Narrative," from Jane Addams and Maya Angelou to Alice Walker and Virginia Woolf, more than 400 years of women's autobiography is presented in this two-volume set. Editors Boynton (English, SUNY at Cortland) and Malin (project director, Sch. of Education and Human Development, SUNY at Binghamton; The Voice of the Mother) and their team of 138 international contributors have compiled an impressive listing of some 190 A-to-Z entries on individual female autobiographers, individual autobiographies, works within particular geographic regions and time periods, and key subgenres. Cross references are ample, and all entries conclude with suggestions for further reading. There is also a guide to related topics, general index, selected bibliography, section outlining the affiliations and qualifications of the editors and contributors, chronological list of covered autobiographers, and separate list of their works ordered by ethnicity and nationality. It is regrettable only that the set lacks illustrations. Bottom Line While Sidonie Smith's influential A Poetics of Women's Autobiography: Marginality and the Fictions of Self-Representation remains a seminal work in this field-as Boynton and Malin acknowledge-the current work is more accessible to the general reader. Its encyclopedic and culturally diverse nature should appeal to a wide audience and provide a valuable starting point for further research. Recommended for all libraries, particularly high school, undergraduate, and public. [Also available as an e-book, ISBN 0-313-06076-2. $274.95.-Ed.]-Tessa L.H. Minchew, Georgia Perimeter Coll.
