Engineers, planners, and researchers from the seven committees that make up the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering have contributed papers on the history of fires that follow earthquake--as a result of broken gas mains, wooden buildings, electrical wiring, and other combinations--and practical methods to prevent them. The histories of the fires following earthquakes are described for San Francisco (1906), Tokyo (1923), Loma Prieta (1989), Northridge (1994), Kobe (1995), Marmara, Turkey (1999), and Napa (2000). Comparisons are made with non-earthquake caused fires and analysis and modeling is given of fire ignition, report and response, growth and spread, suppression, and the final burnt area.
