Doody Review Services Reviewer:Charmaine Johnson-Leong, BDS(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry)Description:This book about contemporary operative dentistry is a blend of traditional, proven methods of the past and recent scientific developments. It is uniquely structured in that it provides theory with practical guidelines. This is a second edition with revised and expanded chapters.Purpose:The purpose is to present current concepts and latest scientific evidence in restorative and preventive dentistry to students, educators, and dentists during this time of rapidly changing technology. The authors meet these worthy objectives covering advances in dental materials, instrumentation, a wider range of treatment options, and more conservative restorative approaches.Audience:According to the authors, the audience is dental students and restorative dentists. In my opinion, the book is geared more for dental students as some chapters are too basic and brief for restorative dentists. If dentists keep abreast of new technologies, many concepts in this book will be covered in journals and continuing education courses. The authors are credible authorities in the subject matter.Features:The book concentrates on recent scientific approaches to restorative dentistry and preservation of as much tooth structure as possible. The text reflects on new trends in bonded restorations, bleaching techniques, anterior ceramic restorations, and fluoride releasing materials. The basics of biological, esthetic, and pulpal considerations, as well as diagnosis and treatment planning are included. The best feature is a well balanced portfolio of tables, graphs, flowcharts, pictures, and photographs. The book is unique in its provision of color flowcharts, pictures, photographs, and decision trees with step-by-step procedural approaches. However, there are inadequate chapters on occlusion and color matching.Assessment:This excellent, concise, comprehensive book provides objective opinions. Compared with other books in this field it provides up-to-date concepts and includes new materials. It will be very useful for dental students and is a justified replacement for the previous edition.

\ BooknewsA text describing techniques for the restoration of health, function, and esthetics of the teeth, with an emphasis on conservative dentistry that preserves as much sound tooth structure as possible. Covers direct conservative restorations fabricated from dental amalgam, resin composite, and resin-ionomer materials as well as techniques for indirect restorations of gold alloy, porcelain, metal-ceramic, and resin composite. New to this edition are chapters on esthetic considerations, tooth bleaching, fluoride-releasing materials, and the diagnosis and treatment of root caries. The chapter on caries management was updated to reflect recent research findings and an aging population with minimal tooth loss. The text is abundantly illustrated with b&w and color photos and diagrams. Annotation c.
