Gay Men's Sexual Stories: Getting It! uses a new methodology-art-informed inquiry-to investigate some of the ways in which gay men engage in sexual contact. Having moved beyond youthful confusion and idealism, the authors in this volume reveal the details of their sex lives in the context of family, friendships, and intimate relationships. With emphasis on psychosocial and emotional context, the contributors explicitly describe their sex lives and sexual attitudes in a variety of situations. In the book's final chapters, the editors share their expertise and insights into sex and truthfulness in gay men's narratives and into the academic literature on gay men at midlife. From the editors: "The authors of these stories were asked to describe a particular sexual context. Some deal with sex-related services such as classified ads (and the modern variant of Internet connections) or venues such as bathhouses, bars, and cruising areas. Others address types of sexual relationships . . . or how they reconcile gay sex with the roles of husband and father. Another group of authors describes particular types of sexual activity, such as masturbation and the use of pornography, learning to enjoy anal sex and watersports, or being a bottom. "We hope that professionals who work with gay men will come to know more about their clients and about the lives of other gay men, i.e. how sexual expression is integrated into the rest of (middle aged) gay men's lives—how they think and feel about it.
