Britain's history overflows with weather disasters. Most of us forget this from one disaster to the next, and we seem as a nation to be increasingly disconnected from what is normal British weather. This allows government and industry to "spin" extreme weather to the benefit of their own political and commercial interests. As Eden puts it: "thirty years ago these spokesmen had the grace to look thoroughly uncomfortable when they lied to us; today they lie with a smile on their face."
