Staats, MD(University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center)Description:This is the sixth edition of a multiauthored comprehensive textbook of geriatric medicine. For the first time, this edition is also available in a digital version. It replaces the fifth edition of 2003. Purpose:In addition to serving as a timely, comprehensive, state-of-the-art textbook of geriatric medicine anchored in science, evidence-based medicine, and patient-centered practice, the book also is intended to meet the learning needs of fellows in geriatric medicine. The authors succeed in modeling a textbook of geriatric medicine on textbooks of internal medicine.Audience:The audience is geriatricians in practice and in training. With this edition, the former chief editor and the book's namesake, Dr. Hazzard, has passed the baton to his colleagues. The authors are all leading experts in the field.Features:The 130 chapters are grouped into four parts covering principles of gerontology, principles of geriatrics, geriatric syndromes, and organ systems and diseases. The numerous tables, diagrams, and algorithms helpfully make important information stand out. This edition is not as well edited as previous editions. There are some grammatical errors, an inconsistent style of citations, and a great variability in the number of references for further reading at the end of the chapters.Assessment:This book, which calls itself an icon, has been a leader in the field. The emphasis on the science and the emulation of internal medicine textbooks will make the online version especially valuable. A chapter on driving, which is influenced by aging and diseases and is a common topic in other leading textbooks of geriatric medicine, might be a useful addition in future revisions. As we approach the time when all leaders in geriatric medicine will be fellowship-trained, the relationship of geriatrics and gerontology will evolve.
