Elder (geography, U. of Vermont) was educated in South Africa and the U.S., and has written extensively on sexuality and geography. He applies feminist and queer analysis in a study of a specific South African space, male migrant worker hostels, which have also become inhabited by increasing numbers of "invisible" female residents. Known as sites of public and domestic violence, destruction and rebuilding, they are also a contributing factor to the spread of HIV/AIDS. Elder's study focuses on the everyday lives of thirty black women living in an East Rand hostel, and identifies spatialized forms of marginalization, impoverishment, infection, and disempowerment.
