Although some elements of Gray's universe are standard vampire fare, the war between vampires and ghosts is both new and intriguing. Few readers will be pleased with the many substantial plot twists at the conclusion—which defines "cliffhanger"—but fans of this genre still will be eagerly awaiting the sequel.
