Where are we going? Not around or over, but through and across until we find a BIG surprise! Not only is this delightful story (based on the song, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt) full of fun and cool sound effects, it also teaches children basic concepts and prepositions. Illustrations by Elliot Kreloff, illustrator of Found an Apple and Tic and Tac, add to the fun.Children's LiteratureIf you want a challenge, try writing a story using only 50 different words. In this particular story the animals wonder where they are going and what they are seeing. As they head out on their walk, they encounter some bamboo. The little animals find that they can't walk around it and they can't jump over it, so the only choice they have is to walk through the bamboo. On the other side of the bamboo, they encounter some water. It presents the same kind of problem—they can't walk around it, they can't jump across it, so they all get in a boat and sail across the water. Once the boat lands, they encounter some mud and the scenario repeats itself. The same is true when they find a cave, but in this case, they do find something that seems to be pretty frightening. It is a big monster who chases them back to their boat and as they sail across the water, they wave goodbye to the monster. This level I title in the "I Am Going to Read!" series, is targeted to students in kindergarten and grade 1. The text is quite predictable the sentences are simple and the illustrations are strictly there to support the text and this artist has added some humor. The words used in the text are highlighted across the top of each spread. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
