The place and reason for a chosen people cannot be understood except in the context of the plan of salvation. This book provides that context. It tells of ancient Israel and of latter-day Israel, and of the rest of the Lord's chosen people from the beginning of time, and even before, and then on to Israel's divine destiny in the eternities to come. It tells of the divinely appointed mission of latter-day Israel, namely to gather Israel and bring the plan of salvation and the means of salvation to all the rest of God's children, the Gentiles. The book traces man's eternal journey from his primal existence in the cosmos as an intelligence, as a spirit child of God, as a mortal, and on to immortality, including the possibility of eternal life, or exaltation in the celestial kingdom of God, as a resurrected, glorified being for the eternities. It explains the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and shows why man has reason to rejoice over the infinitely precious opportunity for life on this globe, notwithstanding his daily adversity. It does so by tracing the history of God's chosen people from their premortal life, through the era of Adam and the other beloved fathers, to Moses, through the scattering of Israel throughout the earth, to the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the latter-day gathering of Israel in these times of the Gentiles, the coming of the ten tribes to Zion, and the return of the tribe of Judah to Israel — all against the background of the "desolations by famine, sword, and pestilence" spoken of by Moroni, the age of wars and rumors of wars and other tribulations we are now in, and on to the Millennium. The nature and reasons for the ancient patriarchal order, and the meridian and latter-day apostolic order, are examined and they are compared in the context of the restoration of the fullness of the gospel and the fullness of the priesthood. The infinite worth of spouse and family are observed in the context of the patriarchal order of eternal marriage, and the virtues required to preserve them for eternity.
