Thirty years ago, John Lennon's life was tragically cut short, ending one of the most influential and brilliant musical careers of the 20th century. This photo-biography, with a preface by his wife, Yoko Ono Lennon, takes a look back at the enigmatic legend, and a life marked by restless exploration-into art and music, consciousness and spirituality, politics and protest, love and peace. Featuring family photos and reproductions of documents that bear witness to momentous events and the origins of his “Imaginative” songs, this compilation, like no other, sheds light on his relationships with Paul, George, and Ringo; his attitudes toward mind-expanding drugs, social revolution, and the Vietnam War; the cataclysmic breakup of the Beatles; and the tenderness of his love for Yoko Ono and their only child Sean.

\ Library JournalThis coffee-table book with excellent photos and a great layout takes readers on a ride through Lennon's life with a firsthand look at his transformation from Liverpool lad to felled icon. It is primarily made up of photos of Lennon, but Blaney (Beatles for Sale: How Everything They Touched Turned to Gold) contributes text to fill in the gaps and contextualize the images. Oddly, the volume takes readers right up to 1974 then stops. While Lennon's life after 1974 may not have been as widely documented as earlier years, the exclusion of these pivotal years is a strong mark against the book. VERDICT Timed to coincide with Lennon's 70th birthday, this volume will provide casual Lennon and Beatles lovers with a quick and appealing read. For more fervent fans, it offers nothing new. Libraries will likely want to give space on their shelves to books on Lennon that dive more completely into his life.—Justin Hoenke, Portland P.L., ME\ \
