The first thorough study of the life and works of Pokorny, who had a profound influence on Celtic studies but whose name and reputation declined after his death in 1970. The author (German, U. of Ulster) makes use of previously unexamined papers and private correspondence to take a critical look at Pokorny's life in the context of the European cities where he lived and the cultural and political movements in which he was involved. He also explores the motivations of German interest in Celtic studies as well as Ireland's attitude to such Germans, especially during the Third Reich. Includes a handful of rather gray photos.
