Long-awaited new edition of the classic text on large animal neurology. Written by one of the world's leading experts, the book reflects his considerable experience gained in America, Australia, New Zealand and Britain. This practical reference is a complete guide for all veterinarians in handling large animal neurologic cases. It is richly illustrated in full colour throughout, with 200 colour photographs plus detailed line drawings. In addition a wide variety of diseases are brought to life in video clips on the accompanying DVDs. This invaluable video library provides examples of actions, movements, postures and syndromes, and helps to visualise the definitions of clinical signs described in the text. Coverage: * Part I provides the information needed by the clinician to approach large animal neurologic cases. * Part II contains clinical discussions of clinical syndromes caused by diseases of the nervous system commonly encountered in practice. * Part III is new for the second edition, and describes mechanisms and most specific neurologic diseases of domestic animals, with frequent cross-references to the clinical problems in Part II. This second edition reflects the considerable advances in the understanding of neurologic diseases, diagnostic modalities and treatment options since the first edition published in 1989. Doody Review Services Reviewer:Harry Fred Troutt, VMD, PhD(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)Description:This is a significantly updated and revised edition of a well-referenced and well-illustrated book that emphasizes neurological conditions of the horse, but also more than adequately deals with problems in cattle, sheep, and swine. It is divided into four distinct parts: the evaluation of large animal neurologic patients (four chapters or sections); clinical problems in large animal neurology (29 chapters); mechanism and specific diseases (eight sections); and a comprehensive two-disc video library illustrating some 37 categories of disorders. Each chapter begins with a drawing emphasizing in red possible lesion locations or pathways for the condition to be described. The first edition was published in 1989.Purpose:In the preface, the author points out the hierarchy of diagnostic approaches he uses when confronted with a neurologic case, from pattern recognition of the problem, to reasoning about it, to identifications of key abnormalities and establishment of an algorithm and database. The fundamental purpose of the book appears to be instructional in a very transparent way -- explaining through text, prudent illustrations, diagrams, and video the how and why of the clinical circumstances. The author succeeds in this endeavor; the book is informative in an explanatory way and actually fun to read.Audience:In his preface to the first edition, the author noted that it was intended "principally for veterinarians to use as a reference to guide them in handling large animal neurologic cases that they encounter." The author is an eminent veterinary neurologist and this second edition is extremely useful as a basic text for veterinary students as well as veterinarians in advanced training in species-specific large animal medicine or surgery. Features:The sections on neuroanatomy and neurologic evaluation have extraordinary application for veterinary students in their early course of study and they also serve as a sound and refreshing review for those in their clinical training years as well as for seasoned clinicians. The book contains a wealth of well-explained photographs and neurologic diagrams that help clarify concepts. The associated DVDs present an array of clinical conditions that are linked to the book via a video library index. It would have been helpful to have a bold reference flag in the book referring to specific video presentations. This, however, is a minor limitation when the overall usefulness of the book and video is considered.Assessment:This book successfully supplements the first edition, providing contemporary information on large animal neurology. It is difficult to assess this book in light of others as I believe it essentially stands alone. Books dealing with large animal medicine offer chapters or sections on neurology, but not in the depth or breadth presented here. This is a must for the desks of veterinary clinicians who will encounter neurologic disorders in large animals.

(Veterinary Times, November 2010)\ "An excellent resource for comprehensive, up-to-date information on neurologic diseases of horses, ruminants, and swine. The numerous illustrations complement the book well. In addition, 2 CD-ROMs containing an extensive video library of clinically relevant material are included... these videos serve as an exceptional educational resource. Overall, this book contains a tremendous amount of information and astute clinical insights reflective of the author's vast experience and knowledge of large animal neurology. As such, it is certain to be a valuable addition to the library of any veterinary student and large animal practitioner as well as specialists in the field of large animal internal medicine and neurology." (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, September 2009)\ "This work is not just an update of the original... it is a very impressive, full-colour hardback, which will change the way we look at neurological cases. The learning potential of this resource is staggering.... This book should have a place on the bookshelf of every veterinary surgeon treating large animals." (Veterinary Record, May 2009)\ \ \
