\ Library JournalCoinciding with an exhibition at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque, NM (September 2006-March 2007), this catalog showcases a collection of posters assembled by Sam L. Slick, who used posters as visual tools to enliven classroom activities in a Spanish-language course he taught at Sam Houston University in Huntsville, TX. Slick grew his collection until it encompassed 10,000 posters, representing some 12 Latin American nations as well as the Iberian Peninsula and including the Chicano experience in the United States. Some fascinating historical side notes emerge here, such as the Franklin Roosevelt administration's influence on poster making in Puerto Rico. The core of the collection reflects the climate of political protest and social radicalism of the 1960s and 1970s and includes posters created in Cuba, Nicaragua, Chile, El Salvador, and numerous other countries. Four chapters by separate contributors discuss the political events addressed by the posters and the aesthetic traditions that influenced them. In an especially interesting chapter, Ilan Stavans (ed., Encyclopedia Latina) meditates on graffiti, poster making (and collecting), and popular communication in civil war-torn El Salvador.
