Oswald (Department of Human and Community Development, University of Illinois) compiles scholarship on lesbians, the rituals in their lives, and the meaning of those rituals for women and their communities. Two introductory chapters examine how lesbians have been compromised by the ritualization of heterosexism and homophobia, while later chapters illustrate the power of ritual to reconcile straight and gay family members, recognize partnership commitment ceremonies, and strengthen lesbian identity.
