There are pronunciation guides, synonym lists, homonyms, color illustrations with captions, spelling tips, entomology and of course the definitions. This new edition has included contemporary terms such as Web, Web browser, HTML, and hypertext. The dictionary also contains a list of the U.S. Presidents, the states, and countries of the world with information such as the name of the capital, population, area and monetary unit and a color representations of each flag,. Full color maps of the world and the solar system plus a table of weights and measures round out the volume. Among them are the words "blog" and "global warming." The illustrations, photos and their captions illuminate the meanings of the words. There are more than 3,000 "detailed images" included in this dictionary and they give a very inviting look to it. Sections highlighted in blue following the definition present the origin or history of the word. Those highlighted in yellow provide information that will help the reader use the word correctly. There are feature panels that provide expanded information, such as the carbon cycle, global warming and the creation of a valley. There are three optical illusions that any reader will find interesting. With its clear definitions, homophones, clean layout and images, I highly recommend this for home, school and library purchase. There are more sections in the back of the book that include the following: information about the U.S. states; maps of North America and the world; countries and their flags; the eight planets; climate; and the world's people. Many timely words have been added--karaoke, Velcro, Internet, online, alimony, rap (music), and telecommunications--but not modem or clone. When there are multiple meanings, each is numbered. Illustrative sentences often follow definitions. The syllabication, pronunciation, plural, and parts of speech round out each entry. Homophones are listed; for selected words, examples of synonyms are used in sentences. Word histories are given for interesting cases and are set off by red bars. Green bars indicate language-usage notes, explaining words such as ain't, among, capital/capitol, real/really, emigrate/immigrate. Spelling tips are offered at the beginning of each letter section. An excellent usage guide, an extensive history of the English language, and a pronunciation key are provided. A final reference section contains portraits and brief facts about the presidents, flags with brief statistics about the countries they represent, several maps, and weights and measure conversion charts. This version updates the presidential information and expands the flag section but does not include a time line. An introductory section explains how to find a word and includes a helpful spelling guide. Colorful alphabet tabs appear in capitals on the left and in lowercase on the right of each spread; guide words appear in blue at the top of each page. Red arrowheads in entries indicate illustrations; there are generally between three and six of these per spread, all with engaging captions. Pronunciation guides, alternate spellings, parts of speech, other forms, and idioms that include the word in question accompany each clearly written definition. Occasional word histories are boxed in blue, and language notes in yellow. Any broad category with which the word is associated-such as history or government-is also mentioned, though these are a bit redundant and arbitrary. For instance, "Science" is an entry, but "Chemistry," "Biology," and "Environment," which could all fall under it, are mentioned separately. Eye-catching feature panels provide detailed information about words of particular interest to children, such as cats, storms, and sharks. The reference section includes maps; a chart showing each state's flag, nickname, capital, population, name origin, flower, and bird; a list of presidents-their terms, First Ladies, and vice presidents; a list of countries and their flags; charts about environmental issues; and a section on the solar system, reflecting Pluto's demotion.
