Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Chronic Illness and Disability, Fourth Edition covers the medical aspects of the conditions most commonly encountered by rehabilitation, nursing, and other health professionals and discusses symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, and prognoses of these conditions Susan E. Appling This second edition, published eight years after the first, is a basic reference to be used in rehabilitation agencies and educational programs in training the beginning non-medical rehabilitation professional. Major chronic diseases are covered, as well as the impact of each disease on the daily personal and vocational lives of patients. The editor states that this is a reference/textbook designed to provide basic medical information about chronic illness and the impact on the psychological, lifestyle, social, and vocational aspects of patients' lives. These are worthy objectives that are well met. According to the editor, the audience includes non-medical rehabilitative professionals with limited medical knowledge, specifically students in rehabilitation counseling programs and rehabilitation counselors. The text is written at the appropriate level for these groups. The editor is a credible authority on the topic. The first chapter is an overview of key concepts associated with psychosocial and functional aspects of chronic illness, with a focus on the impact the disease and related disability have on the individual's ability to cope with changing personal and vocational limitations and relationships with others. In each subsequent chapter, the editor covers a key body system and the related diseases, reviewing basic anatomy (supplemented with elementary diagrams) and physiology, symptoms, diagnostic tests, and treatments, followed by a discussion of the effect each disease has on the individual's psychosocial well being and vocational/functional capacity. New chapters on adaptive devices and managed care are useful, as are several very helpful appendixes including glossaries ofmedical terms, diagnostic procedures, and medications. The final appendix is composed of a variety of case studies and related questions useful in stimulating critical thinking of the rehabilitation student. An extensive bibliography at the end of each chapter should be very helpful to students who wish to explore a topic in depth. Additional illustrations throughout the book would have provided further clarification of medical treatments and diagnostic tests. This book is a thorough, basic reference of a key chronic illness, explained in very clear language that should be easily understood by the non-medical rehabilitation professional. With a focus on the broad impact of illness on the individual, this book is a sound foundation upon which to develop effective rehabilitation plans for a broad range of patients.
