Essential for NCLEX, course and competencey review, this resource is a complete, concentrated outline of medical-surgical nursing. Each chapter contains objectives, pre- and post chapter tests with comprehensive rationales, vocabulary review, practice to pass exercises, critical thinking case studies, as well as NCLEX alerts and new test-taking strategies. Content includes all of the "need-to-know" information covering nursing care for respiratory, cardiac, neurological, renal, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and other health problems, emergency and critical care, and much more. Doody Review Services Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)Description: This is a 763-page, softcover book designed for medical-surgical review for NCLEX. Each chapter has a pretest, review section, and post-test with answers and rationale. An "NCLEX alert" icon is provided by information that is likely to be tested. Purpose: The authors' purpose is "to provide a clear and concentrated review of important nursing knowledge. . . ." This includes NCLEX style review questions and a summary of important information related to medical-surgical disorders grouped by body systems. The objective is accomplished very well. Audience: "The books in this series have been designed for use either by current nursing students as a study aid for nursing course work or NCLEX-RN licensing exam preparation, or by practicing nurses seeking a comprehensive yet concise review of a nursing specialty or subject area." The audience is very specific. The authors are credible and there are even 12 "student consultants" included. Features: Each chapter begins with objectives. A "Review at a Glance" follows, which is mainly vocabulary and definitions. A pretest is presented with answers and rationales at the end of the chapter. There are case studies and a review in an outline format. Post-test questions follow the same format as the pretest. Answers are provided but rationales are given for the correct answer only. The book contains a CD-ROM with the questions that are in the text itself. There is a companion Web site that is "a virtual reference for virtually all your needs." There is one laminated tear out page, Nursing Notes Clinical Reference Card, that provides a summary of frequently used medical-surgical information (pupil size, lung sounds, lab values, etc). Assessment: This is an excellent review book, more review than practice questions. The rationale for the correct answer is given but not for the incorrect responses. I personally like books that offer both. The NCLEX alert icons take up one-quarter of most pages, not the best use of space. The book is very comprehensive. Because of the space dedicated to review (versus test questions), this book would be very good for a refresher course for reentering nurses.
