Horvat, PhD, D(ABMM)(University of Kansas Medical Center)Description:This book presents the basic principles of microbiology, covering the various infectious diseases caused by microorganisms, the pathology of these diseases, the drugs used to treat them, and methods to study them and prevent their spread. Purpose:It is intended as a teaching textbook. The authors have written several versions of this book and bring their experience to this new version.Audience:Undergraduate students are the main audience. The book is written to provide them a solid basis and understanding of microbiology. Features:Each chapter is designed to enhance the learning opportunities for students. The authors note that the organization of the information is aimed at "accommodating different learning styles and experience." They start with an outline, followed by learning objectives and key terms that are used in the chapter. Key issues are highlighted in boxes that set them off from the main text. At the end of each chapter there is a summary, review questions, and Internet resources. The book ends with an extensive index and a large glossary. Material for instructors is also available that can be used for teaching, such as images and PowerPoint slides as well as questions and case studies. This can be very helpful to busy faculty to assist them in preparation of materials. However, I contacted the publisher and I got no response after 10 days.Assessment:This is one of the best textbooks for teaching microbiology that I have seen. A great plus is the material provided to the instructor, but it seems difficult to acquire, so instructors must start early.
