A resurrection of Pirenne's (1862-1935) final and perhaps most controversial work of his career as a renegade medievalist. He argues that it was not the Germanic invasions from the north that ended the Roman empire, but the cutting of trade routes in the Mediterranean by the expanse of Islam.
