Each essay is just long enough to target a topic and provide its essence and just short enough to hold one's interest. The essays, by Baillo (principal, Wildenstein & Company gallery), seven other professors and curators, and additional contributors, begin with an overview and follow Monet's career not strictly chronologically, but by grouping his work into major topics, with a pivotal focus on 1890, when he turned 50, acquired Giverny, and shifted and melded his work from impressionism to flatter, more abstract painting, as seen in the adored Water Lilies. There are over 300 color illustrations and historic black-and-white photographs.
