During his career he served in every rank from subaltern to major general and was an eyewitness to some of the most significant events of this century.In the 1930s he was a platoon and company commander with a British regiment in India. After transferring to the Canadian army, Major-General Kitching went overseas with the Royal Canadian Regiment when war broke out the following year. During the fighting in Sicily he was the senior staff officer of the 1st Canadian Division. After further service on the Italian mainland as a brigade commander, he commanded the 4th Canadian Armoured Division in the Battle of Normandy. In the final stages of the war he was Chief of Staff of the 1st Canadian Corps in Italy and the Netherlands. During the course of the war he served in Sicily, Italy, and northeast Europe.
