This is the first volume of a three-volume set introducing Nigerian approaches to law. In this volume, Mwalimu (senior legal specialist, Law Library of Congress) introduces and analyzes Nigerian public law, saving matters of private and international law for the remaining volume. He discusses Nigerian doctrines of jurisprudence and their roots in Western law and considers the influence of African customary law and Islamic law. The Nigerian constitution is explored in comparative perspective in relation to other African constitutions. The operations of the judicial system and the legal profession are critically analyzed. An overview of criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence, and civil procedure is then presented. The remainder of the volume describes statutory marriage and divorce laws, customary marriage and divorce, marriage and divorce under Islamic law, and legal questions of children and gender with emphasis on Islamic law.
