Set during the Civil War, against a backdrop of grand estates, unimaginable riches, and deadly secrets, three teenagers in Mystic Falls, Virginia enter a torrid love triangle that will span eternity. Brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore are inseparable until they meet Katherine, a stunning, mysterious woman who turns their world upside down.

\ Children's Literature - Lisa Kuehne\ Is blood really thicker than water? The Salvatore brothers, Stefan and Damon, each have unique personalities. Damon is the womanizer living as a free spirit and although Stefan idolizes his brother, he's afraid of disappointing their father. Set during the Civil War, Stefan is forced into an engagement to a woman he doesn't love. When beautiful, mysterious Katherine arrives to their grand estate, the brothers enter a love triangle that will create a rivalry into their relationship for eternity. Stefan jealously watches Damon woo Katherine. He plans to fulfill his father's wedding wishes, until tragedy strikes and sets him free. This opens the doors for him to pursue the girl of his dreams. Stefan is wildly in love with Katherine and their relationship blossoms. Meanwhile, Damon becomes distant and doesn't interfere with his brother's new found happiness, despite his own feelings of love for the same girl. Smith's development of Stefan's character causes her readers to question if he might have multiple personalities. One minute, he's madly in love, even with the knowledge Katherine is a vampire. The next moment, he despises her with a passion and is willing to help his father destroy her, without thinking twice. We never know what mental state Stefan might be in with each turn of the page. Although the plot has great potential to show readers the back story of Stefan and Damon's transformation into immortal vampires, Smith baffles her audience. Since the story is told from only Stefan's perplexed point of view, the story between Katherine and Damon is limited and the reader finishes the book wondering if they missed several chapters while blinking.
