As a boy he was educated at home by his father and later studied in Tartans, in Latakia, and at the University of Damascus. After military service, half of which he spent in prison for political activities, he made his way to Beirut and in 1960 became a Lebanese citizen. Since 1980 he has lived in Paris and taught at the Universite de la Sorbonne Nouvelle. Adonis is the author of more than twenty books as a poet, an editor, a translator, and a literary critic.Samuel Hazo is the McAnulty Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Duquesne University. A widely published poet, fiction writer, essayist, and translator, Hazo is a former National Book Award finalist and in 1993 was named Pennsylvania's first state poet.
