Worst of all, she falls in with two of Hollywood's biggest party fiends when one of them asks her, "Don't you ever do what you want to do?" \ Children's Literature\ - Paula McMillen\ Kaitlin Burke, star of the long-running hit TV series, "Family Affair," is now 17 and preparing for some major changes in her life. The show, which has been her second home and second family since she was four years old, is going off the air, and Kaitlin just wants some time to deal with the loss in her own way. But everyone around her seems to have other agendas. Her manager mom, her personal assistant, her publicist and her agent are all hounding her to find a new project and no two of them have the same idea about what that should be; moreover, none of them are listening to Kaitlin's ideas about what she would most like to do. To make matters worse, she's had a falling out with best friend Liz who is therefore no longer available as a sounding board and counterbalance to all the pressure. Perfect boyfriend Austin will listen and support her, but he is wrapped up in his own goals for a lacrosse scholarship. The only people available to give sympathy seem to be notorious party girls, Ava and Lauren, and suddenly America's favorite good girl TV star is seen out dancing late at night and spending way too much money in trendy boutiques. The plot of this fourth installment in the "Secrets of My Hollywood Life" series is entirely predictable, which diminishes its utility for starting meaningful discussions about personal values and peer pressure. It will probably appeal to girls who are curious about what goes on behind the scenes of filming a TV series, shooting a fashion magazine cover, or dressing to impress. Reviewer: Molly Krichten\ \ \ School Library JournalGr 6 Up\ A popular TV show, Family Affairs , is in its last season of filming and teen star Kaitlin Burke is undecided about what to do next. She can't believe that she won't be returning to the set she has been on since preschool. Nobody understands how she feels, not even her best friend, Liz, who is busy with her own career plans. Feeling ignored and disoriented, Kaitlin starts hanging out with Lauren and Ava, two party girls featured regularly in the tabloids for their wild ways. And it's not long before Kaitlin joins them. After Lauren and Ava crash a photo shoot, she realizes these girls are not her friends and steps up to take control of her life before her career is damaged for good. Fans who enjoyed the first three titles will want this installment, which is filled with lifestyles of the rich and famous, designer clothes, and teenage angst. Readers will certainly recognize the similarities between Lauren and Ava and the party girls from today's tabloid news. Kaitlin is a likable character, but her constant whining and indecision about her next career move can be annoying at times. Fortunately, they don't detract from the story too much, and the novel moves quickly along with blog entries and tabloid news interspersed throughout. A quick, fun read.-Kelley Siegrist, Farmington Community Library, MI\ \ \
