Life in the United States since the late 19th century has undergone incredible changes. Advancements in technology and in society itself have transformed lives. Modern Americans survived wars, economic depression, protests, and scandals to emerge strong and ready to face whatever the future holds. Children's Literature Part of the "Signature Lives" series, this biography highlights the amazing work of one of 20th century's greatest chemists. The grandson of slaves, Julian was encouraged to pursue his dreams by his educator parents and earned degrees in chemistry from DePauw, Harvard, and the University of Vienna, although he consistently confronted racism in each situation. After earning his Ph.D, Julian was unable to take a teaching job at American universities because of various state laws that disallowed a black professor to teach white students; finally, he was hired by the Glidden Company in Chicago shortly after synthesizing physostigmine, a medicine important in the treatment of glaucoma. Julian became the head of Glidden's Soya (soybeans) division and spent the next seventeen years synthesizing and mass-producing a number of steroids/hormones that positively impacted human health. Julian eventually started his own laboratory and promoted opportunities for African-American chemists that had been denied them in other aspects of American society. Over the years, Julian received a number of awards for his distinguished work in the field and his exemplary service to the African-American community. Besides being an exceptionally well-written biography, the book also provides interested readers with a time line of events contrasting Julian's life with world events, additional references about the chemist and related issues, sites related to Julian, and a glossary to help with unfamiliar words. A first rate biography. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
