The scientific field of design optimization has evolved tremendously in terms of both theory and of the software available to support it. Based on a recent research project, this ssentially practical text provides a thorough introduction to the current applications of design optimization. The authors also apply its principles to some branches of engineering for the first time. The methodology is fairly general and can be applied to many real-life engineering problems in fields as diverse as architecture and automobiles. Written for engineers whose work is related to design, the book will be of interest to postgraduate students and lecturers dealing with design optimization. An accompanying CD-ROM contains related programs. A background of finite element methods and some understanding in numerical methods of design optimization is required. Nevertheless, even the formulation of single or multiobjective optimization p blems is formulated in the book. The main purpose is to present practical examples of optimization problems and in this regards the book is very different from most of the existing literature. Booknews Hernández and Fontán (both civil engineering, U. of La Coruna, Spain) explore the application of design optimization in branches of engineering that are as yet untouched by it, and provide more detailed descriptions of the practical examples that have already been undertaken and are relevant widely in other fields. They use graphical information extensively to make the examples more attractive to their intended readers, primarily engineers whose work in related to design but possibly also undergraduate students. The disk contains a Windows version of VTOP 1.0 for optimizing the force and geometry of tendons in a prestressed concrete beam. Distributed in the US by Computational Mechanics, Inc. Annotation c.
